Eden Prairie High School Teacher Receives Award

September 26, 2018

Eden Prairie High School Science Teacher Kristin Gabel received the Sarah L. Tilman Memorial Science Teaching Award by the College of Biological Sciences at the University of Minnesota. This award recognizes a secondary science educator for excellence in teaching and mentoring.

“I feel very humbled and honored to receive this award. Sarah Tillman, for whom the award is named, was a science teacher who was passionate about making her classroom engaging and fun. This is also our goal, to inspire students and help them make connection between our learning and the natural world,” said Gabel.

Gabel was nominated by Mitchell Cave, a former Eden Prairie High School student and current student at the College of Biological Sciences at the University of Minnesota.

“Every single day I left her class with a deeper appreciation for the scientific method and having learned something new. She found a way to make every lesson interesting and really related it to real life. For example, we spent some of our class time outside taking data on flowers and pollinators in order to provide results to a national study. Seeing how something as simple as counting bees can translate to large scale scientific research really sparked a passion inside of me,” Cave said in his nomination.

Gabel will be recognized at the College of Biological Sciences Recognition and Appreciation Dinner on Oct. 11 at the McNamara Alumni Center on the University of Minnesota campus.
