“It left me feeling the most fulfilled and empowered as an educator”: Real-world applications of classroom concepts at CMS

This past quarter, seventh grade students in Lauren Koller’s Enriched English class turned their inspired writing into service-based practical applications. Working in a research-based writing unit, students crafted their first formal essay based on findings related to the question, “What is an issue or cause that more people should care about or pay attention to?”
Writing on more than a dozen different topics, from bullying prevention to deforestation to the importance of quality nursing homes for seniors, the CMS students were empowered to explore issues that resonate with them personally. “At an age where many students are navigating their identities, I wanted to reinforce the important message that their voices matter. This is a crucial message for our middle school students, and I believe it encourages them to feel seen and valued,” said Koller.
The theme for the writing unit, “Use Your Voice! Advocating for Positive Change,” wouldn’t be complete without incorporating meaningful service projects. The first involved creating handwritten letters for Operation Gratitude, an organization which sends care packages to deployed troops, new recruits and first responders. Between these letters and others written to local fire departments, students sent out more than 250 messages of gratitude in just a week! Additionally, students made more than 20 tie blankets for rescue animals at The Bond Between, providing them with comfort and warmth.
“Fostering empathy and compassion at this stage is essential,” said Koller. “I hope that this unit extended beyond a research project, leaving students with a sense of their own importance and the power of their voices. I am immensely proud of the effort and passion each student put into their work.”
We’re proud of these students too! Well done, Ms. Koller, and well done class! What a way to demonstrate advocacy, kindness and being an active and caring member of our Eden Prairie community.
