Each year, students in grades 3-5 take part in a test we refer to as the MCA (Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment). Students in these grade levels will take a Reading MCA test and a Math MCA test. If you have a student in 5th grade, they also take a Science MCA test. These tests are aimed at measuring each student’s achievement related to Minnesota Academic Standards.
As a school, we use this information to help us identify areas we can improve but also know that one data point does not tell the entire picture of each student. Student writing, performance tasks, reflective journals, goal setting, conferences with students, portfolios, formative assessment, summative assessments, self-reflection of progress, continuous feedback, benchmark assessments, and subject area tests all help show the evidence of learning for each student.
A good night’s sleep and a healthy breakfast are always a great idea, and that is especially true the night before taking an MCA test. We coach our students to do their best and show us what they know!
