NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY (NHS)
National Honor Society (NHS) is the nation’s premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students. More than just an honor roll, NHS serves to recognize those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, service, leadership, and character. The National Honor Society chapter of Eden Prairie High School is a duly chartered and affiliated chapter of the prestigious national organization. Membership is open to those students who meet the required standards in four areas of evaluation: scholarship, leadership, service and character. Standards for selection are established by the national office of NHS and have been revised to meet our local chapter needs.
Application information is available in the Career Resource Center at the beginning of March and are due at the end of March for membership during the following school year. Any sophomore or junior with a minimum of a cumulative 3.7 GPA may complete an NHS application and informational packet each year in the spring. HS membership is limited to juniors and seniors. Completed applications that have been turned into the Advisor by the designated due date are given to the NHS Faculty Council for evaluation and final selection. Selection is based on the candidate's ability to demonstrate high achievement in the four NHS pillars: scholarship, leadership, service and character. Membership is determined by a majority vote of the faculty council, following an evaluation of candidates’ qualifications for membership. Students receive a letter regarding their selection or non-selection in June. Following notification, a formal induction ceremony is held at the school in the fall to recognize all the newly-selected members. The obligation as a National Honor Society member includes regular attendance at monthly chapter meeting, participation in at least two chapter service projects per semester, volunteer (at least) 40 service hours per school year and continue to uphold the character and academic requirements. There is a $50 membership fee.
New Student Information: A new student must have attended EPHS a minimum of one semester before selection; transfer students who were NHS members at his/her previous school may be considered for immediate membership.
