Educational Opportunities & Support Services

The CORE Program
The CORE Program is an in-school credit make-up program for eligible students needing to make up credits in math, English, social studies and/or science. See your counselor for more information about CORE.

Academic Center for Excellence (ACE):
ACE is a center for learning in EPHS for students who require academic support in mainstream classes. Students do not need to register or qualify to receive assistance. They can drop in during a study period, before, or after school and get help with: review for tests, study skills, assignments, independent or small group study, and/or computer use.

Special Education:
Special education services are designed to meet the individual educational needs of students who qualify for service through a referral and testing process. Special education service may vary from direct classroom experiences in a resource setting to indirect/ consultative service with a student's mainstream teachers. The services and specific program that are provided are determined by a cross-categorical team that meets to develop the student's Individual Education Plan (I.E. P.).
Programs include, but are not limited to, services for students with speech and language disorders, students with a learning disability, students with emotional or behavioral disorders, students who are mentally or physically impaired, students with Autism Spectrum Disorder, or students with vision or hearing impairments. Referrals to any special education programs should be directed to the Counseling Office or the Intervention team.

Discover:
Discover is an academic support program for students who are interested in improving their success in school. The program includes attendance monitoring, contact with teachers and parents, and increasing student responsibility and self-esteem. Referrals are made to the Discover program by teachers, advisors, counselors, deans, principals, and parents.

English Language Learners Program:
Prerequisite: Staff decision and testing. Referrals should be directed to the Counseling Office.

Gifted Services:
There are a number of services available for gifted and talented students. Course offerings for gifted and talented students are offered through the variety of departmental course offerings. Other options include Post Secondary Enrollment Option (PSEO), University of Minnesota Talented Youth Mathematics Program (UMTYMP) and numerous academic contests. Eden Prairie High School also has a Credit for Prior Learning (CFL) policy which provides students the opportunity to demonstrate prior learning. A student may test out of a course if s/he is able to demonstrate prior knowledge and mastery of the course outcomes. Each department determines the appropriate assessments and acceptable level of performance. A student may not test out of any course in which s/he is currently enrolled. Testing will occur twice per year. All applications for this procedure must be completed by November 1 for terms 3 and 4 and April 1 for terms 1 and 2 of the next school year. Forms for the Credit for Prior Learning process are available through the Gifted and Talented Coordinator.

The Gifted Services Coordinator also assists students with the Advanced Placement (AP) program. It is a nationally recognized rigorous curriculum for highly motivated high school students. AP tests are administered in May. A qualifying score in any test may enable a student to receive college credit, meet prerequisite requirements or both, depending upon the individual college or university. Eden Prairie High School offers 11 Advanced Placement classes across several disciplines. Opportunities exist to complete advanced classes in many departments and participate in this testing program. Any qualified student may take an AP exam, even if EPHS does not offer the Advanced Placement course.

Students receive one credit per term for time spent in seminars and with mentors.
