Eden Prairie High School was named a Blue Ribbon school of Educational Technology by the United States Department of Education on March 26, 1996.

Eden Prairie High School was one of only 28 schools nationally selected for special honors in leadership of educational technology. According to Sharon Bobbitt, Director of the Knowledge Applications Division of the U.S. Department of Education, this award was given to those schools having done an "exemplary job of planning and integrating technology into every facet of their school programs." The pervasiveness of the technology--"especially in the classroom and in the instructional curriculum" was rated highly in the rigorous evaluation process.

Tom Fenton of the Eden Prairie News reported that winning schools needed to meet the following criteria:

"apply technologies that are appropriate for specific educational objectives; use distance education to expand educational opportunities; use technology to support the education of students with disabilities; and use interactive technologies where possible."

Sharon Bobbitt, in a letter to Blue Ribbon School Principals said, "You, your staff, students, and community should be very proud of your school's extraordinary accomplishments in this cutting edge of American education. It is clear that your students will be well prepared for the Twenty-First Century."
